In 1991, Nathalie Loriers represented the RTBF television channel in a jazz tournament, and walked away with first position thanks to the composition "Dance or Die". The tune has since become a favourite in concert, and is now the title track for a new collection of material. When the first album ("Nympheas"-IGL088) was released, it was hailed as a masterpiece. "Dance or Die", however, introduced new elements. The American rhythm section Cameron Brown and Rick Hollander bring new energy to the project. The transformation is almost complete with the addition of Jeroen Van Herzeele - the "angry young tenor" - on sax. The contrasting atmospheres, the breaks, the declaration of independence of an artist are at all times blessed with the magic of a sublime feel for the piano, by an inner voice that can sometimes be heard faintly behind the piano.

With the support of young lions, the music of Serge Lazarevitch reaches the incredible dream of bringing together modernism, elegance and charm.

Fresh and inspired compositions played by a group whose complicity continues to grow give "Noordzee" its very particular tone - a jazz record that makes you want to watch the sky and run barefoot through the sand.
Originally a trio, the group found in Joachim Badenhorst an ideal partner in 2004. The result is four singular talents that bring their audience places they never thought it would go, meeting Lennie Tristano, Nathalie Loriers and John Talyor, with glimpses of Arvo and Bach.

La Sanza is a talented group - led by Eddy Mboyo - which sings in Luba, Mongo and Swahili. The line-up consists of four male percussionists and two women who are both dancers and musicians. The group's originality lies in its blend of traditional instruments and others dreamt up by the fertile imagination of Eddy Mboyo. All instruments are made from recycled materials – drums, percussion instruments, balafons and so on.
Being both keen on free expression and eager to restore the standing of traditional instruments in general, Eddy works tirelessly on behalf of musical cross-fertilisation, building a solid bridge between tradition and modernity by creating new hybrid sounds through the use of traditional instruments in a modern orchestral setting.

It is also where different but complementary personalities meet: the exemplary rigour of Ali Ryerson, the inner vibration of Charles Loos and the omnipresent poetry of Steve Houben.
This escapade for trio is immortalised by a CD, all of the songs of which are signed by Charles Loos. It also boasts two extracts of the ballet "No Wall, No War", a piece commissioned by the "Hidden Valley Institute of Arts", California.

Ensembles performing a chamber music variation of progressive rock often get compared to Univers Zero and Art Zoyd, but if the list is stretched, Belgians Julverne are likely to find themselves in the number three slot. Taking their name from one of the earliest speculative fiction writers, Julverne peform a classically inspired music, whose (very) occasional tangents into darker territory within this chamber sort of format undoubtedly draw comparisons to their more well known Belgian contemporaries.

Serge Lazarevitch lived in the USA where he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with Mick Goodrick, Mike Gibbs, John La Porta. During this American period he met Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell. Back in Europe in 1979, he settled down in Belgium and was part of the jazz Belgian scene along with Philip Catherine, Jacques Pelzer, Steve Houben,Charles Loos.
This new recording is the logical continuation of the previous one "Cats are welcome", an album which made with press as well as the public. Turning from the trio to the quartet with sax, Serge lazarevitch explores still further through his own compositions and those by his favorite composers, here O.Coleman, into the musical universe he likes.

With a writing style whose refinement begs for subtle interpretation based on constant interplay, Paolo Radoni's trio aims for intimacy, impressionism and a serenity that is certainly not lacking in charm.
The musical collaboration between Bart Defoort and Diederik Wissels started in 1998. Together with Stefan Lievestro and Teun Verbruggen, they create a poetic, lyrical and exciting musical world. The group is called "Streams" , which is an image for all the inside and outside movements in life. Streams plays the compositions of both Wissels and Defoort. They have an open character, a rich palette of harmonic colours and "grooves" which are at the same time dynamic and subtile. The group feels close to a certain European Jazz tradition. Diederik Wissels made several CD's under his own name and as a sideman with Philip Catherine and Guy Cabay.

Album: - From this day forward

Diederik Wissels is a contradictory mix of modesty and exacting self-demand. An accomplished pianist, he has made a break from the constraints of jazz todedicate himself over the last few years to an inventive collaboration with singer David Linx. "From this day forward", Diederik Wissels's latest production, is very similar in style to his previous record, "The Hillock Songstress". The same aesthetics and a similar atmosphere prevail, only this time magnified through the use of strings. His dream has long been to add strings to the interpretation of his music. These only distantly resemble, with a detour via Arvö Part or Gorecki, those of Claus Ogerman. His dream did not include borrowing other people's arrangements. The strings, all the instruments, had to release purity and transparence. As the music goes on, the impression that it is a performance fades away to reveal a creativity that the listener finds hard to separate from the beauty of the work.
Listening to "From this day forward", who can say where the writing stopped and improvisation took over? The "Theme - Improvise - Theme" approach suddenly appears outdated. The sheer spontanaeity of Diederik Wissels music takes the listener by surprise, combining science and naivety, severity and freshness. "From this day forward" offers supreme authenticity and an identity built on curiosity, intelligence, patience, courage, sensitivity and, it must be said, beauty.

Diederik Wissels is one of the rare musicians able to bring us far beyond ourselves or deep within, without us being really able to say which. Attention and distraction sit close together. His music has been noted through collaborations with Steve Houben, Larry Schneider, Philip Catherine, Chet baker, Toots Thielemans. Active as a musician, an accomplished theorist and practitioner, a pianist of irreproachable sound and pedigree. A dandy of sorts.
In "The Hillock Songstress" we find all these qualities showcased in a trio, magnified by the lyricism of the guests: Kurt Van Herck on sax more than convincing ; Gwenaël Micault proving that the fashion for bandoneons is more than a fashion; the percussionists who keep the rhythm up and singer David Linx who is quite simply David Linx - essential.
If an European jazz current exists, the one of Keith Jarrett or Jan Garbarek for example, Diederik Wissels music belongs to it. "The Hillock Songstress" has been chosen by "Le Monde de la Musique as "Choc de la Musique 1994".

A versatile musician, pianist, teacher and researcher, Arnould Massart moves between styles as diverse as jazz, contemporary music and pop (where his open conception of music makes of him an in-demand artistic director, composer, arranger and performer for Maurane, Alain Chamfort, Khaled and many others...). In jazz, one of his most memorable works was the powerhouse trio he formed in 1983 with Philippe Aerts and Philippe Mobers, "Three to Get Ready". An album of the same name was released in 85. Almost 20 years later, Massart is tempted by the urge to take to the road with the trio again, and the Igloo label by the urge to re-release on CD what had only been available on vinyl until now and has not aged in the slightest. Because although the three companions have each made their separate marks in jazz since then, all the promise of their talent was already visible. Bright, cheerful, jazzy, Latino, on the border of samba and jazz, of improvisation and emotion, "Three to Get Ready" offers a selection of Massart compositions that constantly juggle with dynamics and rigour, virtuosity and depth. This samba-bop manages to blend sensual Brazilian rhythms with the impulsive spontaneity of Bop, not forgetting the leader's trademark touch of humour!A recording to be discovered - or re-discovered - with three bonus unreleased tracks.

Anne Wolf has been enjoying a vibrant, varied career for over ten years. A pianist with formal, classical training - first prize in sol-fa and jazz piano from the conservatory - Wolf has played French chanson, Brazilian music, soul and African music. Her sparring partners have included Christian Merveille and Sttellla, and she has also worked with Pierre Van Dormael, Manu Hermia, Ben N'gabo and Parfums Latins.
When she decided to form her own trio, she turned to Chris Joris on percussion and CÈdric Waterschoot on bass to accompany her compositions, jazz standards and Brazilian repertoire (Gismonti, Pascoal). This tight combo has just recorded a first CD,"Amazone"that features the energetic Brazilian singer Marcia Maria on four tracks (she also provided the lyrics on the title track). Anne Wolf is a pianist that plays with rhythm, pleasure, instinct and melody. All these can be found in abundance on "Amazone". It largely features her own compositions, those of her two partners as well as tracks by Charles Loos, Kenny Barron and Egberto Gismonti.
After generating incredible interest from audiences and the press, the first recording from the quartet of Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila has been released.Tuomarila has been in Brussels since 1994, where he studied at the Royal Conservatory. His quartet displays a remarkable degree of maturity and character. Echoes of Finnish folk music can sometimes be heard, but also a new look at some standards. The quartet has been very busy over the past few years. They were first noticed when they won the Hoeilaart International Jazz Competition 1999, where Tuomarila also picked up an award as best soloist!
With sax-player Nicolas Kummert (best soloist at the Eben-EmaÎl Jazz Tournament 1998) and the rhythm section Christophe Devisscher and Teun Verbruggen, the band went on to become one of the most in-demand live performers. Although unsigned, they played over 50 gigs in 2000, including dates in Belgium, France, Germany Spain, Finland, Australia.Their combination of swing and energy, together with the sensitive yet virtuoso playing of the pianist, make this quartet one of the most promising new bands of the past few years.

In 1997, Philippe Reul (bass), Nicolas Kummert (sax) and Renaud Person (drums) created Alchimie in Brussels and started establishing themselves on the jazz scene. The name is a reference to the various ingredients that make up their music: a blend of rock, funk, world music and jungle that is rich in musical lyricism and rhythm. The trio grew into a quartet, as Philippe Reul increasingly picked up guitar and left the bass to Fabrizio Erba. The four musicians demonstrate surprising maturity in concert, electrifying the atmosphere with their own compositions or distinctive covers of contemporary composers.

"Anfass" is a musical bridge between Tunisia and the Belgian French-speaking community Wallonia - Brussels. On both sides of the Mediterranean, musicians had expressed their desire to work together on a project: the Tunisian guitarist and jazzman Fawzi Chekili, and the Belgian guitarist Alain Pierre. Once the first contacts established, Alain Pierre and Fawzi Chekili realised the impact of their respective capabilities. Fawzi Chekili was interested in the harmonic work of Alain Pierre, who in turn was captivated by the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Arabic music.

On this recording, we discover a light set-up putting in evidence her fullfilled maturity and this underlying fragility that make us stop breathing to feel her thrill.
Keeping ears open, opening up new ways and clouding over old ones, creating concentration and energy affinities, this is the magic touch of the trio that Nathalie Loriers formed with Hans Van Oosterhout and Salvatore La Rocca. They follow her compositions's contrasted ways and her winding inspiration with a clever flexibility and all the musicality and sensibility she could expect.

« Sabin Todorov is inspired by traditional music, Bulgarian folklore and typical Balkan rythms but Lennie Tristano, Joey Calderazzo, Chick Corea, Bojan Z and Fred Hersch are also among his influences.
He met Lionel Beuvens at the Royal College of Music in Brussels. The two got on like a house on fire and it wasn’t long before they started making music together. Todorov is delighted Beuvens is still a member of the trio, because no one plays the special Bulgarian rythms, like 9/8 and 7/8, quite like Beuvens does. At the Brussels International Singer’s Competition they took the stage with Sal La Rocca for the first time, and Todorov fell in love with the Italo-Belgian double bass player’s energy and his artistic qualities on the spot. In 2005, they formed the Sabin Todorov trio, which has won the crowd’s hearts with their vibrant mix of modern jazz and Bulgarian melodies. »

« The quartet, with Eric Vermeulen on piano, Lieven Venken on drums, Sam Gertsmans on bass, and me on the alto and soprano sax, presents a serie of new compositions where I try to explore the yet unknown lands between jazz and indian ragas. Altough the sound of the quartet remains without any doubt in the esthetic of modern jazz, some compositions and improvisation techniques which are here proposed are based on what I called "Rajazz". Some other compositions are still in the usual modern repertoire, but I always tent to use the most epured melodic material I can, and I try to write compositions which don't need particular arrangements, in order to allow the maximal space of freedom for each musician.
Through this repertoire, I efforced myself to propose a language which is rooted in the tradition of jazz, and which is in the same time concerned in opening new doors. This program is indeed in the continuity of the sixties, very influenced by my favorites, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, but tries nevertheless, through open space and through the Rajazz concept, to sign up our present time. »

Where Sicilian tarantellas meet oriental melodies and Neapolitan dances encounter African rhythms – it all blends into one, and that is Al Funduq, a genuine nugget burnished by percussion playing of extreme refinement. Carlo Rizzo is a sensational tambourine player, his dialogues with the percussionist from Burkina Faso, Zoumana Dembele, amply demonstrate the range of melody and functions that percussion can have. Nicolas Thys on double bass and Fabian Fiorini on piano contribute with that touch of adventure for which they are famous, while Giovanni and Melchiore Di Salvo is the very incarnation of traditional Sicilian song.

The word “chanteuse” is often bandied about. De Biasio is probably the textbook definition: dark, sensual, jazzy. Steeped in the heritage of jazz singers, her first album “A Stomach is Burning” is a moody, sparse jazz poem in shades of blue.
Her musical path started with a highly classic jazz training course and has led her to other worlds where her love for funk, reggae and groove could be satisfied. Stirred by congratulations as well as by criticisms, it is a fire spreading among the people who are listening to her. And don't be surprised if, while she is whispering, you feel a shiver down your spine, it is only a flame that is caressing you..

Marco has the sea’s elegance. His guitar speaks of dephts that are far out to the seas horizons, like strings which vibrate between earth and sky. He knows his sea well, and knows that wind that throws stones to those who do not know how to listen, the mutability of time. Hence, as an expert sailor, he takes us far, without warning, along unknown routes, melodies and rhythms that taste like salt or the sweetness of a kiss. When I listen to his music, I like to imagine that Nio Tio is a far out island, exotic and far, but so close to our hearts, that it’s like finding the way home, sailing forever.

"Solatge“ is a poetic catalan word that describes what is left after something has gone and could be translated with “sediment”. The catalan saying „als solatges hi ha la flor“ (on the sediment grows the flower) expresses even better the poetry behind this word. „Solatge“ is the flower that has grown after the definite end of L´Ham de Foc, but it is much more than a delicate plant. The first album „Dèria“ is a strong statement of Mara Aranda who was the voice and, together with her companion Efrén López, also leader of the internationally acclaimed band L´Ham de Foc from Valencia. Her latest projects were the sephardic music band Aman Aman and the Al Andaluz Project that was founded together with the German medieval band Estampie.
